From England to the World, my Bond family has immigrated to most corners of the globe.
Have you ever found yourself asking where did my family come from?
It's probably not something we do in our busy lives these days, running here and there taking care of all the things that keep our lives ticking over. Or maybe it's something you keep in the distant background, something you will look into someday when you get time. I kept it stored away in the background for almost fifty years, but now I can comfortably say that I have a good understanding of my family's movements in years gone by, and I’m still learning.
From England to the World my Bond family have immigrated to most corners of the globe, through modern communication devices I can be in touch with family members where ever they are at any time of convenience. I enjoy the late night, early morning ding's on my iPhone telling me I have a new message. I'v learnt to accept the fact that people forget to check the time zone difference before messaging. If you have accumulated a considerable number of newfound cousins through your Ancestral research, and your in communications, then you will understand and like me embrace the fact that at any time a cousin may contact you with that well-known ding sound at 2 - 3 am.
I welcome and embrace the fact that I have now discovered new cousins from around the world who I never knew of before commencing my ancestry Journey. All of them are the fruits of my ancestors who immigrated from England, Scotland and Ireland. I find it mind-boggling how I was so comfortably unaware of my relationships with other people around the world before now.
If you are new at ancestry researching and relying on your newly uploaded DNA results to give you all the information you need to connect with lost family, I inform you again that you may still require skills in record researching to confirm your relationships.
Having mentioned this I wish to point out that if you find that you have made what you believe to be a solid connection to a person without too much effort, it is usually because someone has put in the effort in their research and you are riding in on their success. Be thankful that some other family researcher has gone before you in finding and documenting the facts.
I would like to thank all my cousins, whom I have found through paper records and confirmed with DNA matching, for their trust and continual support in my family research.
Western Australian, settlement.
The first Europeans to permanently settle were free settlers in Western Australia, arriving in 1829. Their camps along the Swan River became Fremantle and Perth. An emigration scheme in Britain brought soldiers who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars, along with private family groups, artisans, and servants. For the first 20 years, the colony attempted to develop without convict labour, but the soils weren’t fertile, and there weren’t enough workers. Some settlers took sheep inland to better pastures and found some success. In 1842 the British government began sending boys from the Isle of Wight’s Parkhurst Juvenile Prison to the Swan River Colony, where they apprenticed with local employers.
My Bond family is my Paternal male family line and I will begin with the immigration history of this line that I have researched to date, and my Paternal cousins can also enjoy their journey of discovery. We all understand that our family consists also of our Maternal female family line, of equal significance to me and my Maternal cousins therefore the second half of this blog will be dedicated to the immigration history of my Maternal family line.
Harry Bond was born on 06 April 1864 and lived in Kilburn London England with his parents and siblings up until he immigrated to Western Australia 1881-1883 aged 17-20. His travel record evades me at the moment, he may have landed at Fremantle or Albany WA and then travelled to Fremantle. The port at Fremantle may have been closed at the time of his arrival due to silting up of the port entrance and therefore closed to arrivals from England. Albany port was used in such circumstances as it remained silt free, from 1880 to 1898 the harbour of Fremantle was also undergoing major reconstruction.
On the 2nd March 1894 in the town of Beverley Western Australia Harry is married to Kate Elizabeth Wise daughter to William Henry Wise and Julia Ann Hutchings. The arrival of the Wise family is well documented, in contrast to Harry's arrival. Kate and her family arrived on board the Helena Mena on 1st Oct 1881 landing in Fremantle, Kate was aged 7. From the arrival record of the Wise family, we can see that the Fremantle port was receiving passengers in Oct 1881. I can also mention here that according to ship records the Helena Mena was delayed during its voyage out to Western Australia by several days due to being becalmed at sea.
There was a ten-year age difference between Harry and Kate, from family oral history I get the understanding that Kate was in good control of Harry at most times, and they had a family of six children. They lived in the town of Balingup for forty years before moving to Bunbury in 1946, where they lived their remaining years at 13 Ramsey Road. (See Bonds of Balingup)
Harry and Kate were parents to six children, and there are multiple stories of their lives in Western Australia to be found here in my earlier blogs and also in the family tree at Ancestry. Kate's Wise family history is also well-recorded for future family historians to discover.
Children of Harry and Kate Bond: (Western Australia)
1. Lilian Bertha Bond. Nov 1894 - 5th Nov1985, m Arthur Fitzgerald Chapman, has issue in Western Australia.
2. Robert Vivian Bond. 28th Apr 1896 - 27th Apr 1968, m Eva May Cordelia Pitt, has issue in Western Australia.
3. Frank Bond. Dec 1897 - 15th Jan 1899.
4. Violet Bond. 1900 - 21st Mar 1993, m Spencer Albert Tate, has issue in Western Australia.
5. Lena Rose Bond. 1902 - 1980, m James John Pitts, has issue in Western Australia. m William Lockhart Mackay.
6. Cyril Leonard Bond. 8th May 1904 - 20th Dec 1983, m Margaret Smith Lavery, has issue in Western Australia.
The lack of arrival records for Harry need not be a barrier to fulfilling a rich understanding of his life after his arrival and that has been my objective for many years now with success. There are hundreds of individuals now living in Western Australia who can attribute their life to the arrival of Harry and Kate Bond. Likewise, Kates Wise's family has given me an abundance of facts that has enriched the stories in her family line.
James Robert Bond and Anne Maria Vivian, Information/family stories were never forthcoming about the siblings of Harry Bond so all information to do with Robert's Immigration is gained through records from England and America, however, we can see that Harry also named a son Robert Vivian Bond. I call this a Family Anchor Point where we see repetitive names being used in our family, giving our research strong verification and an insight into how family honour their heritage.
Firstly Robert Vivian Bond and Clara Kate Traice were married on 12th July 1886 in Bermondsey London England, Robert is aged 24 and Clara is aged 19 years of age.
Robert and Clara arrived in the port of Queenstown - New York, on 27th Augustus 1886 at the age of 24; on board the City of Chester, records indicate that they were travelling on to Texas after arriving in New York.
After their arrival, the paper trail for Robert Vivian and Clara Kate Bond continues till their respective passings. They had a family of five daughters and spent their years living in Bexar San Antonio Texas USA.
Children of Robert and Clara Bond: (Texas USA)
1. Violet Vivian Bond. 1st May 1887 - 24th Jan 1956, m Charles Cleaver Smith, had issue.
2. Mary (May) Vivian Bond. 22nd April 1889 - 26th June 1966, m Harvey (Harry) Moses, had issue.
3. Katie Vivian Bond. April 1891 - 18 Sept 1930, m Edward Charles Hucker, had issue.
4. Lillie Bond. July 1893 - 1903, m Hampton, had issue.
5. Agnes Rose Bond. May 1900 - 1905.
Though there are only records to follow on the Bonds of Texas there is still a huge potential to gather a great deal of family information and maybe find family oral history through descendants of Robert and Clara Bond. An interesting fact to note is that daughter Katie Vivian, named one of her children with the Bond name ie; Bond Hucker. There is usually a door or two left half open for us to open fully and make discoveries. DNA matches in the Smith family line and also the Moses family line adds strong conformation to the possible success of further research. I have reached out to the DNA connections in Texas, unfortunately, no reply has been forthcoming.
Frederick Bond was 6th child of James Robert and Anne Maria Bond and brother to Harry and Robert. Frederick married Alice Northover on 21st Jul 1889 and they had seven children one of whom was named Vivian Frederick James Bond, 24th Jun 1890 - 26th Nov 1985. Records in America show that Vivian changed his name around to Frederick Vivian on official documents this has proved to be a common practice in the family, to this day in fact; I have followed this practice in some records. Fred and Alice didn’t immigrate but they do have a child and maybe a second who immigrated to the USA.
Children of Frederick and Alice Bond (America):
1. Vivian Frederick James Bond. 24th Jun 1890 - 26th Nov 1985, m Susie May Moss, had issue.

6. Winnifred May Bond. Dec 1910 - 1911.
Vivian Frederick James Bond is known as Fred to his family, on his Naturalisation record he states his name as Frederick Vivian Bond and seems happy to drop James from his signature. He immigrated to America on 2nd Nov 1914, arriving from Leithbridge Canada, he resided in America from 5th Nov 1914. An indication is that he must have arrived in Canada from England before going to America and applying for Citizenship on 1st May 1918 - granted on 9th May 1918.
Fred has a military history being based at Camp Kearney California, his enlistment date was 29th Mar 1918 and his discharge was 1st Jul 1919 a brief military service record. His marriage to Susie May Moss was on July 1, 1919.
Couple celebrates 65 years together
Fred V. Bond and Sussie May Bond of Newbury Park celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with family and friends on Sunday.
The couple was married in National City, California, on July 1, 1919.
She was a Red Cross nurse and her future husband was an Orderly World War 1.
Since he was an enlisted man - a sergeant - and she was an officer, they were not allowed to associate with each other. But they met in secret and 65 years later, the couple say they have no regrets that they broke the rules.
The Bonds moved to South Dakota to farm and are the parents of four daughters, Virginia Benson of San Bernardino, Maxine Bowman of Lake Havasu City; Winifred Snyder, deceased; and Faye Weathers of San Leandro.
They moved to Southern California in 1930. Fred retired from Northrop in 1967 and they moved to Thousand Oaks in 1973.
Fred is 94 years old and Sussie 86. For hobbies, he makes rugs and she tends to her garden.
They are the grandparents of nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Guests at the celebration Sunday in the recreation room for the Newbury Park townhouse, Ramona Drive, Thousand Oaks, included friends and family from all over.

Cecil Bond 5th child of Frederick and Alice Bond also shows records that indicate that he may have immigrated to America.
On the 18th Apr 1929, Cecil arrived at Port Huron, Michigan on board the ship Athania and on the 16th Dec 1929 Cecil departed New York on board the ship Pennland, he was bound for Plymouth, England.
This may have been a reconnaissance tip to test the waters for immigration, a work in progress.
